 | One of the most popular trumpeters in the world, Arturo consistantly displays phenominal technique, range and improvisational ability. Besides the trumpet, Arturo skats and plays the piano with remarkable skill. Early in his career, he was inspired and encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie to pursue a career playing jazz. Arturo eventually defected to the United States from Cuba to follow his dreams, and now he inspires countless musicians. His story has been made into a feature film, For Love or Country. He began his studies at the National School of Arts in Cuba, and later formed the group Irakere, which Dizzy heard while visiting Havana in 1977. Since that time, Dizzy became Arturo's mentor, and eventually hired him to play in his United Nation Band. While touring in Italy with the UN Band, Arturo defected to Florida. He later performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Leningrad Symphony and at jazz festivals around the world. He has made several recordings that show his mastery of the trumpet, all of which are praised by his many fans around the world, and his piano playing can be heard on a recent release entitled My Passion for the Piano. |
